Law Enforcement: Reinforcing Moral Courage
These are challenging times for police officers and agencies who remain committed to excellent public service in socially polarized, turbulent times. This ethics-oriented training program uses straight talk – and good listening – to reinforce moral courage: the capacity to do what is right in the face of non-physical adversity. Moral courage enables us to engage in difficult conversations with colleagues and with the public, to own and address mistakes, and to grow as professionals. It enables us to be our best even under difficult circumstances.
Our approach is based on proven ethical principles and more than a dozen years of experience working with law enforcement agencies. It is intended for agencies who are already committed to excellent policing that that reinforces public trust. This is not a remedial course. The program is supportive of officers’ perspectives and sensitive to their challenges, while reinforcing the importance of continuous improvement.
Topics include:
- Understanding and reinforcing moral motivation, moral clarity, and moral courage.
- The power of professional integrity, mutual support and mutual accountability.
- Recognizing and responding to “moments of truth.”
- Factors that put moral courage at risk.
- Individual, team, and agency practices that reinforce moral courage.
- Effective language for difficult conversations.
- The importance of individual wellness and interpersonal relationships in maintaining moral courage
Program length is 2-4 hours, depending on the desired depth and breadth of instruction. It can be combined with advanced ethical decision-making for a full day (8 hours) of training. For maximum impact, this class can be customized to specific agencies, addressing specific topics and real-world examples for class participants.
